Internet filtering is here, but do not worry – it is used only to block child pornography. Think of the children!

Oh I am so surprised. If you happen to get into child pornography blocking list, you can’t appeal to anyone. So put your trust in the government and the police.

There will be no appeals, there will not be any transparency, there is no need to have dialogue as decisions are final.

As Matti Nikki has already documented, censorship-lists do not work, can and will contain domains that are put on to the list wrongfully and are blocked either by accident or because of other reasons that are not within the scope the law.

From technical perspective block lists are wrong and inefficient tool and makes one wonder what was the purpose in the first place to use them at all. Block lists work only against really staticly named and public services that have a lot invested in their brand name and web address, for example online gambling sites that are advertised in TV or in magazines – but don’t really work against illegal pornography that is by definition mostly underground and on technological scale is light years ahead of politicians. There was an interesting article in wiki leaks about the technology used ( http://wikileaks.org/wiki/My_life_in_child_porn ) which should make it clear to anyone at least seemingly competent person that block lists will not and can not stop child pornography.

Dear ebook industry – decide on standards and get us all affordable and usable ebook readers

I’ve been watching with interest how the book industry has been going on and about the issue of ebooks. New Kindle looks promising, but based on reviews does have still a lot of room for improvement – including in price and simple features like zooming the documents.

Even though I am really, really happy with my iBook – I would still be delighted to have a light ebookreader that has an amazing batterylife and clear display that is easy – and comfortable – to read. Naturally I would expect the device to have the ecosystem of content also ready, similarly as Amazon starts to have with Kindle or what Apple has with music in iTunes. It would suck to be limited into an ugly walled garden, where you can’t read your ebooks on any other device than the reader – so I have my hopes up that you could export in the future purchased ebooks into PDF with your customer information embedded into pages or something similar. Draconian DRM is so oldschool and really does not serve customers’ needs at all. If I am on the run, I would be happy to read information from the ebook reader – but while in the office or at home, I might also want to read same books from 30″ screen on my mac. ( Note to self, buy 30″ display )

It would be great if the mechanics of the eBook reader and the ebook ecosystem could be kept separate – though in the beginning it is clear that whoever the players are, they will try to keep both parts in their own control, allowing also faster innovation and changes to specification without any negotiations with third parties. I’m ok with that in the beginning, but would sincerely hope that after the model has been proven to work and standards developed, there would be a surge of different reader applications and vibrant ecosystem for content owners and users. iTunes or Amazon.com could be a really good platform for content purchases – allowing users to either subscribe to content or buy individual pieces of content.

He says, she says…

This was funny news clip from Canada.

http://www.cbc.ca/clips/mov/fralick-2-cabbie090515.mov

And more about the story.

Apparently some party-girls thought that the world belonged to them and got mad to a taxi driver since they were not allowed to smoke inside his cab — especially since it is illegal. When they got to the destination, they desided not to pay and described to bystanders that taxidriver tried to molest them. Police is called and hilarity ensures when taxidriver shows video recording of the whole event.

Now, it is clear that girls were young, drunk and stupid – but what should legal and economical ramifications be for almost ruining one man’s life? Slap on the wrist?

Stranger than fiction – fascism comes in small pieces

These days whenever I glance over news topics in Reddit or other services I have to wonder whether fiction imitates real life or the other way around.

The Shield is great tv series, but one should not want to read about it in real life.

Big brother tv-series is great fun for those without anything better to do, but to have your government put you on terrorism lists and follow and interrogate you based on your participation in protests or political movements.

Articles in The Economist about three strikes internet law in France and laws for internet filtering and monitoring can be really bad news hidden inside good intentions. As internet has become integral part of citizen collaboration and information sharing laws that are sold with intentions to stop child pornography, terrorism and piracy can be and are most likely used to oppress ideas not so popular and circumvent ideas of free speech. In similar fashion there is an ongoing discussion about limiting journalists’ source protection in Finland, and naturally there are positive comments from the Confederation of Finnish Industries supporting the idea as it could keep trade secrets of being exposed when whistle blowers would be sooner or later be named and exposed.

What kind of crazy pills people have been taking?

Instant gratification with credit card and on demand services

It is such a shame that old media companies do not play the game as well as Apple and pirates do. You could download latest episodes of House or 24 via piratebay in few minutes – or hours, where as it will take from days to months to get same episodes from Amazon on DVD as it will usually take quite a while before on going seasons are published on DVD. You can download many of the latest pop releases from iTunes with few Euros or listen some of them in Spotify with your subscription. You can read thousands of different technology books online on O’Reilly’s Safari-service for a fixed monthly fee.

At least from the perspective of consumer on demand services work and as you get instant gratification, you don’t seem to mind so much about the price – as long as the price is kept low for each individual purchase or subscription month. I really don’t mind paying for my entertainment – but I do mind waiting when I would want to see, hear or feel something specific. I do mind having to walk to the store, to the library or to the post office – I am such impatient that I hate it, but then again I have no doubt that future generations and teens today are far more impatient even now.

Sony Entertainment’s CEO described it by saying that Internet has “created this notion that anyone can have whatever they want at any given time. It’s as if the stores on Madison Avenue were open 24 hours a day. They feel entitled. They say, ‘Give it to me now,’ and if you don’t give it to them for free, they’ll steal it.” http://current.com/items/90049647_sony-pictures-ceo-im-a-guy-who-doesnt-see-anything-good-having-come-from-the-internet-period.htm.

With intangible products that are just bits and bytes flickering on the screen or vibrating in the air as sound waves consumers do not subscribe to the idea that they are stealing – as in the end they are also participating in creating the phenomena and value for that product by being an avid fan and vocal supporter. Some TV-series like science fiction series Firefly or HBO’s The Wire did not get their share of fame and fortune when broadcasted on TV, but both series have large following with fans buying DVDs and – most likely even more – downloading episodes illegally.

It is clear that record and media companies have been stalling the inevitable and dug trenches that have allowed them time to develop and try new strategies and ways of working with internet distribution and new business models. In recent issue of The Economist was article about Time Warner, their cable TV-business and emerging internet based offering of TV-shows through – for example Hulu. Hulu seems an interesting experiment, but as it is not available outside US it really doesn’t matter to us europeans yet. Comedy Central did experiment with internet distribution of their shows like South Park and Daily Show — which I loved — until they did cut it off from users outside US.

What I really would wish to happen is to be able to purchase entertainment packages straight from the producers and get them delivered to me through the internet. It would be great to purchase a bundle of channels that I could watch and record through the internet – even though at the moment those shows would not be delivered here on cable or through local satellite offering. It would be even better if producers would work in collaboration local distributors that have cables all the way to the consumers – giving guarantee of fast local downloads and instant gratification when needed, including possibility to watch episodes of shows in better HD formats now – instead of waiting for hours to bittorrent files to download over the wire. It would be great to finally see that media companies would realize that they have global audiences instead of tiered customer groups that can be controlled with areacodes. In the world of global politics and internet memes episodes of Daily Show, South Park or even 24 are contemporary and meaningful now — not so much 18 months in the future.

Give me instant gratification, and I will give you access to my billing information.

Eurovision finals and kickboxing world championships

Today is interesting TV-night.

Eurovision song contest finals just started. But as watching that show is so gay, we had to compensate it by watching kickboxing world championship match.

So far the kickboxing match beats the Eurovision song contest.
